Blue Hoots Pre School
Sickness Policy

Our aim is to provide the best possible care for all our children here at Blue Hoots especially when they are contagious to others. It is the parents’ responsibility to ensure that their child does not attend nursery and put other children/staff at risk. Therefore if a parent continually sends a sick or unwell child to nursery we will be forced to review the child’s place.
You are requested to report all absences due to sickness to the staff at nursery before your child is due to attend.
Please use the following guidelines before bringing your child back to nursery:
Cold and Flu:
The child should have a normal temperature and feel fit and healthy.
Conjunctivitis:
Treatment can be prescribed by a GP or pharmacist. Treatment must have commenced for at least 24 hours, and children’s eyes should not have any discharge from them before returning to nursery.
Chicken Pox:
There is usually an incubation period before the spots, where the child feels unwell and irritable. Once the spots appear your child needs to stay off nursery until all the spots are fully scabbed. Your child needs to stay off for a minimum of 5 days after the spots have appeared and can only return once all spots are scabbed fully. Please note: this could take longer than 5 days in some cases.
Impetigo:
Medical advice should be sought as weeping sores are contagious all sore must be covered with an appropriate dressing.
Hand, foot and mouth:
Human cases are the source of infection and are spread by direct contact with the blisters, faeces, nose and throat discharge (coughs and sneezes) respiratory droplets. A doctor will need to confirm diagnosis and the blisters should not be weeping and your child should be well enough for nursery before they can return.
Head Lice and nits:
Parents’ will be contacted via telephone and asked to collect their child so that treatment can commence as soon as possible. A notice will be displayed on the door to the room to inform parents’ of any cases of head lice within nursery.
Measles:
The rash should have gone and the child active and healthy.
Sickness/diarrhoea:
Children can return to nursery at least 48 hours from last bout. Parents/carers will be contacted immediately, to collect their child after any sickness/diarrhoea whist at nursery.
Temperature:
The normal temperature for a child is 37c. If a child’s temperature reaches 38c or above parents will be contacted to collect their child. If your child has had a temperature in the last 24 hours they should not attend nursery. A high temperature is usually a sign that the body is trying to fight an infection. Teething is not medically known to cause a fever above 38c. If your child develops a high temperature whilst at nursery we will call to ask permission to give calpol but your child will still need to be collected from nursery,
Unknown rashes:
Medical advice should be sought with a doctor.
Calpol - Calpol contains Paracetamol and should only be used for pain relief . Children who have been given calpol/ Nurofen can not attend nursery for 24 hours.
Please note: an unwell child needs one to one attention that we cannot provide at nursery.
The nursery keeps a small range of spare clothing for these circumstances.
Should your child prefer to lie down quietly while they wait for you to collect them we can provide a suitable, low bed for their comfort where they can rest in the quietly.
